Prof. Mahendra Patel is a retired senior faculty member of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, India. Presently, he is a mentor professor at Symbiosis Institute of Design, Pune and mentor consultant at Leaf Design, Mumbai.
He has taught at NID, Ahmedabad for a long 39 years and conducted numerous workshops at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda; MICA, Ahmedabad; IDC-IIT, Mumbai; Srishti School of Art, Design & Technology, Bangalore; MIT Institute of Design, Pune and many more. He has also conducted numerous workshops at universities of repute in the USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Pakistan.
He has studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU, Baroda and National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad followed by a degree in Advanced Graphic Design at School of Design, Basel, Switzerland. In 1971, he went on to work on type design projects at Atelier Frutiger in Paris.
Prof. Mahendra Patel has been chosen to receive the prestigious Gutenberg Award for the year 2010 by The International Gutenberg Society, Mainz, Frankfurt, Germany. This Award is instituted in 1968 to recognize outstanding artistic, technical or scientific attainment in the art of printing, there have been only 17 awardees so far, and Mahendra Patel’s award for his work on “Type Design Development of Indian Scripts and Map & Signage Design Systems for several cities” is a first for any Indian. He has been invited by the great Mayor of the City of Mainz to receive this very prestigious award at Mainz, Frankfurt on the 26th of June, 2010.
